Premiere Vision – The Textile Design Profession

This venue and all it contained opened my eyes to the inside of part the textile design world. As part of a student contingency we were reminded how very lucky we were to be included in the days events. We were given a talk by staff who explained no photos, drawings or even conversations were to take place with the participants. It was big business with closely guarded secrets of new designs, lines and collections. The participants competed from people all over the world for the attentions of the would be buyers from all over the world. From small boutiques and specialist suppliers and buyers to top names and big department stores. So sorry not much visually to show you.

It was an enormous venue similar to a stadium on a purpose built complex of equally large and impressive buildings that house various similar events. Once inside there was literally a sea of cubicles. White pristine and intimidating. Enclosed in each cubicle is the Designer. Rows upon rows of fabric/yarn/thread swatches could be seen displayed to attract buyers in. Exclusive appointments had already been made and were under way as I wandered by. The drone and hubub of deals being made and serious faces. It was big business.

There were collection forecasts in the centre that visitors could wander through that helped buyers predict trends. There were special areas for each accessory. From belts, buttons to threads, bags, fastenings and labels.

It was a very interesting visit and did show me one of the ways  the industry operated. The atmosphere was very intense but then this was one of the important events of their potential livelihood, you could understand and get a feel for that. They were artists after all. The competition is intense and obviously so by the sheer volume of attendees. The quality of the work; printed, woven fabrics, papers, was outstanding and catered for all needs. From haute couture to car factories wanting internal car interiors furnished.
